#About the Agashiv Caves: Karad, an important city located in the Satara district of Maharashtra has quite a few interesting features. One of them is the group of 66 Buddhist caves that are known as Agashiv caves. In fact, these rock-cut caves from the Hinanyan sect of Buddhism are situated on the south-east portion of the Agashiv hill that rises from one end of the city. The experts tell us that they were built around 1st century BCE, but the fact remains that, they had remained untenanted for most of the following centuries. These are smaller caves in comparison to some others in the state. These caves bear an inscription stating that the caves were donated by Sanghamitra to the Bhikkhu Sangha.

#About the Karad City: It was originally known as "Karhatak". Karad is also a city of historical importance. The first capital of the Shilaharas was probably at Karad during the reign of Jatiga-II as known from their copper plate grant of Miraj and Vikramankadevacharita of Bilhana. Hence sometimes they are referred as 'Shilaharas of Karad'. The capital was later shifted to Kolhapur. Among the Silaharas of Kolhapur who ruled over Satara and Belganv districts from 1000 to 1215 A. D., Gonka deserves mention here, as he is described as the Lord of Karhad (Karad), Mairifvja (Miraj) and Konkan.

Heritage Walk To Ancient Naneghat and Kukadeshwar Temple

Heritage Walk To Ancient Naneghat and Kukadeshwar Temple

#Date: Sunday, 8th September 2019 (One day tour)

#All Age Group are Welcome.

#Cost : Rs.1,500/- per head

#Limited Seats: 30

#About the Naneghat: Naneghat is a mountain pass in the Western Ghats range between the Konkan coast and the ancient town of Junnar in the Deccan plateau. The pass is about 120 kilometres north of Pune and about 165 kilometres east from Mumbai, Maharashtra.  It was a part of an ancient trading route, and is famous for a major cave with Hindu Sanskrit inscriptions in Brahmi script. These inscriptions have been dated between the 2nd and the 1st century BCE, and attributed to the Satavahana dynasty era.

The inscriptions are notable for linking the Vedic and Vaishnavism deities, mentioning some Vedic srauta rituals and of names that provide historical information about the ancient Satavahanas. The inscriptions present the world's oldest numeration symbols for "2, 4, 6, 7, and 9" that resemble modern era numerals, more closely those found in modern Nagari and Hindu-Arabic script.

The scholarship on the Naneghat Cave inscription began after William Sykes found them while hiking during the summer of 1828. Neither an archaeologist nor epigraphist, his training was as a statistician and he presumed that it was a Buddhist cave temple. He visited the site several times and made eye-copy (hand drawings) of the script panel he saw on the left and the right side of the wall. He then read a paper to the Bombay Literary Society in 1833 under the title, Inscriptions of the Boodh caves near Joonur, later co-published with John Malcolm in 1837.

#About the Kukadeshwar Temple: Kukdeshwar Temple is located in Pune District of Maharashtra. It is about 15 km west of Junnar and lies on the banks of Kukdi River. It is a Shiva temple noted for its beautiful sculptures and carvings. The roof of this temple is in a dilapidated state. Chavand fort, also known as Prasannagad, is approximately 3 km from Kukdeshwar temple. Nearest Town is Junnar.

#About the Rajgad Fort: Rajgad is a hill fort situated in the Pune district of Maharashtra, India. Formerly known as Murumdev, the fort was the capital of the Maratha Empire under the rule of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj for almost 26 years, after which the capital was moved to the Raigad Fort. The Rajgad Fort is located around 60 km to the south-west of Pune and about 15 km west of Nasrapur in the Sahyadris range. The fort lies 1,376 m (4,514 ft) above the sea level. The diameter of the base of the fort was about 40 km which made it difficult to lay siege on it, which added to its strategic value. The fort's ruins consist of palaces, water cisterns, and caves.

The splendid architecture of the fort is divided into three parts, and the overnight trekking experience is simply breathtaking. The three sub-plateaus of Padmavati Machee, Suvela Machee and Sanjevani Machee surround the Balle Killa, and house the Padmavati Temple, Padmavati Lake and Chor Darwaja. Explore the lush trails around Pali Darwaja, Gunjavane Darwaja, Daru Kothar, Rajwada ruins, Horse lake, and several other important attractions for a tryst with history.

#Date: Sunday, 11th August 2019 (One day tour)

#About the Bahadurgad Fort: Bahadurgad Fort aka Fort of Pedgaon aka Dharmaveergad are located in Pedgaon village in the Shrigonda Taluka of the Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra. Bahadurgad is basically a land fort. It is situated in the base village itself. Many ruined structures are scattered in the village. There are two doors for the fort. One which opens in the village itself; which is still in a good condition, while the other is at the end of the fort. In the post medieval period, Bahadurgad served as a major Mughal post. The fort itself was said to have been built by Bahadur Khan Kokaltash, the mughal viceroy to the Deccan and hence named Bahadurgad.

When, Shivaji Maharaj, organizer of the Maratha Empire got the news that 200 top notch Arab steeds alongside a few wealth had arrived at Bahadurgad (in Pedgaon). Bahadur Khan was the administrator of the fort around then. Shivaji Maharaj wanted to plunder the stallions and the wealth. He composed a power of 9000 and separated it into two- one of 2000 and the other of 7000. Bahadur Khan came to think about the proposed strike of Shivaji Maharaj and kept the principle entrance of the fort open and arranged his energy. On the other hand, Shivaji Maharaj himself had organized the spilling of Marathas arrangement of assaulting Bahadurgad.

Likewise 2000 Marathas entered the fort through the primary door. The watchful Mughals assaulted the Marathas. Then again, Marathas were not intrigued by battling and withdrew. Bahadur Khan began pursuing them. This was precisely what Shivaji Maharaj needed. The fort was left exposed. The second cluster of 7000 Marathas assaulted Bahadurgad. They rapidly got hold of the 200 Arab stallions and the wealth, and fled.

#About the Bahadurgad Temples: There are five temples in the fort, two of which are known as Lakshmi Narayan temple and Baleshwar Temple. Lakshmi Narayan temple is a good example of architecture with carved pillers, images of animals on the walls of temple. There is a good carving in the temple. Another Baleshwar temple is dedicated to Lord Shiv. It is also in a ruined state. It contains 8 pillars with good carving. Fish farming is also done in Pedgaon in the Bhima River.

#Date: Sunday, 30th June 2019 (One day tour)

#About the Shivneri Fort: Shivneri is known to be a place of Buddhist dominion from the 1st century AD. Its caves, rock-cut architecture and water system indicate the presence of habitation since 1st century AD. Shivneri got its name as it was under the possession of the Yadavas of Devagiri. This fort was mainly used to guard the old trading route from Desh to the port city of Kalyan. The place passed on to the Bahmani Sultanate after the weakening of Delhi Sultanate during the 15th century and it then passed on to the Ahmadnagar Sultanate in the 16th century. In 1595, a Maratha chief named Maloji Bhonsle, the grandfather of Chhatrapati Shivaji Bhosale, was enabled by the Ahmadnagar Sultan, Bahadur Nizam Shah and he gave him Shivneri and Chakan. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Bhosale was born at the fort on 19 February 1630 (some accounts place it 1627), and spent his childhood there. Inside the fort is a small temple dedicated to the goddess Shivai Devi, after whom Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Bhonsale was named. The English traveller Fraze visited the fort in 1673 and found it invincible. According to his accounts the fort was well-stocked to feed thousand families for seven years. The fort came under the control of the British Rule in 1820 after the Third Anglo-Maratha War.

#About the Shivneri Caves:

The Shivneri Buddhist caves are located near Shivneri Fort on the top of the hill, where Shivaji Maharaj was born. It is a group of 60 caves that were dug in the first part of the 1st century CE. At the beginning of the 2nd century CE, these caves were a flourishing center of Buddhist activities. The caves are essentially made of viharas or small cells, but there are also chaityas. The caves are scattered on three sides of the west-east-south triangle formed by Shivneri Mountain.
